Tivoli Under the Stars is back for its third season every other Friday night June 2nd through October 6th! Enjoy some of your favorite films in the unparalleled setting of our new outdoor cinema. 

Curated by Jerry Harrington, Tivoli Under the Stars continues Tivoli Cinema’s legacy of bringing the best of film to Kansas City. 


Tickets & Schedule

All outdoor screenings are currently sold out for the 2023 season!

Each purchase includes:

  • An eight-foot “pod” of dedicated lawn that can seat up to four people (five allowed only if the fifth is a child under three years old)
  • Movie tickets for up to four people
  • Museum admission for up to four people
  • Garage parking for up to two cars

Food & Drink

  • Food and drink are available for purchase from the Walking Snack Bar. 
  • The Walking Snack Bar is open for 2 hours beginning 1 hour before each film starts.  
  • Outside food and drink are not permitted. 
  • Concessions include alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks, candy, pop culture popcorn and graze boxes. 
  • Limited quantities of graze boxes will be available without pre-order while supplies last. 

What to Expect

Arrivals

  • Tivoli Under the Stars is located on the grassy roof lawn between Lens 1 & Lens 2. 
  • Screenings will start 10-15 minutes after sunset. 
  • Doors to the cinema open one hour before the printed start time. 
  • Seating is first come, first served. 
  • With your purchase, you will be emailed four tickets for the film.  
  • Tickets will be scanned upon entering the cinema. While you do not need to use all four of your tickets, your group is only provided with one pod and must sit together. 
  • If you do not have your tickets when you arrive, visit the Info Desk in the Bloch Lobby to retrieve them. 
  • No one will be allowed into the cinema without a ticket. 

 

Inside the Cinema

  • While pod space is provided with purchase, seating must be carried in by guests. 
  • Blankets, pillows and chairs are all encouraged. 
  • A small tarp underneath your blanket is recommended. 
  • Dress for all potential weather changes. Umbrellas are not permitted while the movie is playing. 
  • Pods can accommodate a maximum of four people. If a group has a child under three, it is allowable in this instance only to have five people in a pod. Under no circumstances may six people or more be in a single pod. 
  • Accessible restrooms are available on-site in the Bloch Building. 
  • Food and drink are available for purchase at the Walking Snack Bar. Outside food and drinks are not permitted. 
  • Smoking or vaping inside the cinema is not permitted. 
  • Animals (other than service animals) are not permitted.

Parking

Parking 

  • Parking is included in your purchase. 
  • Wristbands will serve as your parking ticket and must be shown when exiting the parking garage. 
  • Accessible parking is located in the museum parking garage. 
  • After parking, enter the Bloch Building and take the elevator to the Plaza Level. Signage will lead you to the outdoor screening location. 

 

 

Drop-Off Point

  • The cinema can be easily reached via the North Plaza Drive located on 45th street.
  • The North Plaza Drive is available as a pickup and drop-off point for all guests.

Bathrooms

  • Accessible bathrooms are available within the Bloch Building and will be open throughout the screening.

Accessibility

  • Cars may pull into the North Plaza Drive to pick up and drop off individuals where the sidewalk has curb cuts. 
  • Tivoli Under the Stars offers ADA preferred seating on paved surfaces inside the cinema. 
  • To reserve ADA preferred seating in advance, email ask@nelson-atkins.org or call 816.751.1278 24-hours before a scheduled film. 
  • Subtitles will be turned on for all film screenings. 
  • Special accommodation can be made for low-vision guests. 
  • Please email ask@nelson-atkins.org or call 816.751.1278 24 hours before a scheduled film to make us aware of your needs and we will do our best to accommodate. 
  • The Bloch Building Café area will remain open during screenings, and anyone is welcome there for a low sensory moment at any point during the film. 

Inclement Weather Policy

Weather Policies

  • Guest safety is our primary concern during inclement weather.
  • We will make every effort to show movies in the outdoor theater as scheduled and only adjust in inclement weather circumstances. 
  • We encourage all guests to dress for the weather – and potential weather changes. 
  • Umbrellas are not permitted while the movie is playing. 

Inclement Weather

  • The film will be moved inside to the Atkins Auditorium when rain or severe weather is predicted in close proximity to the museum during movie hours (approximately 6:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.) with 60% certainty or greater. 
  • The call will be made by 4:00 p.m. on the day of the film. This information will be emailed to all ticket holders.  
  • Tickets are non-refundable, rain or shine. 

Notifications

  • If inclement weather is 60% certainty or greater by 4:00 p.m. on the day of the film, ticket holders will be notified by email by 5:00 p.m. on the day of the film if the film will be moved inside.
